Shepparton Brass Band in partnership with Shepparton Theatre Arts Group Inc. are pleased to announce that the play Brassed Off will be staged as a joint venture in February and March 2009.
Adapted from the film of the same name, Brassed Off involves economics and music as the twin focal points of a comedy/drama about a community in crisis.
An information Night will be held this coming Monday, September 15 at the Bakehouse, Wheeler St from 7.30pm for any interested persons wanting to be in the cast of the show. Auditions will take place Sunday, September 21.
A synopsis of the play follows:
The small British town of Grimley has long been dominated by the coal mine where most of the men work, and the town's greatest source of pride is the Grimley Colliery Band, a brass ensemble that's won a number of nationwide competitions.
Danny is a retired miner in poor health who directs the band; a national championship is coming up, and Danny is determined that Grimley will walk away with a trophy. But many of his musicians have other things on their minds: word has it that the mine may soon close down, and, in a city already suffering an economic downturn, this is just short of a death sentence.
Adding to the intrigue is the return of Gloria, who used to live in Grimley and is back in town for a while on an assignment.
While the band has traditionally been all-male, Danny considers bending the rules to allow Gloria in the band, as she's a fine fluglehorn player, but her presence is bad news for the town: she works for the government and is investigating the feasibility of closing down the mine. Ace trumpeter Andy also has mixed feelings about Gloria; they were once a couple, and he still has feelings for her, but he's not sure he wants to set himself up for another breakup.

Entries Open For 2009 Ten In 10
As part of the SheppARTon Festival 2009, Shepparton Theatre Arts Group Inc. (STAG Inc.) invites entries for a short play festival aptly titled Ten in 10 for $10.
The concept is simple; ten 10 minute plays, all for the ticket price of ten dollars and follows in the wake of a successful inaugural staging at the 2008 SheppARTon Festival.
STAG Inc. President, Jo Chambers believes the event will only continue to grow.
"We had eight plays staged last year by writers around the area and this year we're already receiving plays for consideration from as far away as Melbourne," Ms Chambers said, "To be able to stage ten new plays, featuring actors from within the company while nurturing the talents of novice directors is not only entertaining our loyal patrons but also ensuring that the company continues to exist for years to come."
For SheppARTon Festival artistic director, John Head, STAG Inc.'s inclusion in the 2009 program is a natural progression from the inaugural 2008 event.
"This year's was very well attended and the excitement and interest has only grown since then," Mr Head commented. "We invite any budding playwright to submit a play or two for consideration as there are some great undiscovered literary talents out there."

A River's Tale
A River's Tale is an art project, devised by three artists: Angie Russi, Bev Hoffmann and Jan Donaldson. The aim of the project is to explore the stories that connect the communities of Shepparton and Mooroopna through the land that divides them; the river and its flood plain.
The stories collected from individuals from both sides of the river will be woven together to create the fabric of a new story as seen through the eyes of the river which has been witness to the layers of humanity who have lived along its banks and flood plains for thousands of years.
A River's Tale will be told though the creation and installation of temporary sculptures placed along the length of the walking path that connects the towns and through a theatrical performance which will take place at Kids Town on Friday 26 September 2008. Using David Diamond's 'Living Theatre' techniques and improvisation exercises, the rehearsal will explore personal connections and memories of the Goulburn River and it's surrounding community history.
Please contact Bev Hoffmann on 0448 090 262 for further details and enquiries about the performance and rehearsal.
