2025 Short Play Festival Synopsis

1. Anniversaries Are Everyday Occurrences: By Cindy Doherty
An elderly man is sitting on a park bench talking out loud to himself when a young married couple walking past overhear him. The young woman keeps on walking but the young man stops to chat to him out of concern for the old man’s well being.They discover they share the same date for their wedding anniversaries only about 60 years apart. The young man learns there is more to life than remembering dates and giving gifts.

2. This Function? Dysfunction!: By Neroli Cochrane
Sheryl and Kevin are preparing a surprise 50th wedding anniversary party for Sheryl’s parents. As the preparations continue, their slightly dysfunctional adult children – Roger, Tiffany, Crystal and Ewan – share some wisecracks, reflect on some youthful memories of their grandparents, and disclose some unexpected revelations.
The party is intended to surprise the two guests of honour. But are there other surprises in store?

Couple, Ted and Beryl, choose their surprise 39th wedding anniversary celebration as the time to tell their family some unexpected truths.

4. You Willie: By John Head
Ian is in a good mood on his way to meet some work mates at the pub, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the death of a Union rep and drinking legend, William McAmish. But he stumbles across Nadia, a recently arrived Ukrainian refugee and new work colleague, who also has an anniversary, but hers is sad. The ensuing conversation highlights the great divide between the lifestyle and freedoms of their respective countries.

5. Her Mothers Hands: By Cindy Abbey
The play explores the idea that different people grieve differently, that there is no timeline for grief and that love never dies. It centers around Maggie who has planned a family get together on the anniversary of her mother’s birthday. It has been twelve years since their mother died, but Maggie, like her mum (the ghost), but unlike her siblings, is finding it hard to let go. An argument between sisters concludes with a conversation with a wise person who brings the play to its conclusion.

6. Planning a Funeral: By Susan Corry
Nathalia is a small, close-knit community of about 2000 people. Everyone knows everyone else’s business. The newest coffee shop is the place to be seen. Coffee catch ups have a lot to answer for, but the gossip is usually positive. In Planning a funeral two local Catholic women begin to organise the wake for a devout Catholic man who has recently departed. But has he? Plans are well in place when they find that the large gathering at his house was to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary.

7. Serendipity Anniversary: By Cindy Doherty
A couple reunite on the first anniversary of the day they met – only they haven’t spoken since – and they don’t know if the other will
attend after making the plan the year before. They are at the cafe location only to find one remembers the anniversary event and one
doesn’t. A memory of the liaison dotted with movie characters with similar names to their own. Will they start a romance a year after their
encounter, or will it fail, never to speak with each other again?

8. Carbon Copy: By Jan Weldon – Veitch
When James takes his wife Trina out to celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary, a coincidence occurs, when they meet up with their former classmate Sally. Thinking it would be fun to reminisce over old times, Trina invites Sally and her brother back to their house. Unhappy over Trina’s decision, James complains about her lack of consideration. But, as the night progresses, the truth about James’s past will end in dire consequences.

9. A.S. Society: By Amanda Lay
It’s the six year anniversary since the formation of the A.S. Society. Over the years membership has dwindled and Sandy is getting desperate, not quite desperate enough to date Phil. Lucy is thinking about telling Eva how she feels and Anita is determined to stick to her agenda. When newcomer Brett turns up unexpectedly Sandy is excited and welcomes him in. Anita’s suspicious, Phil is jealous and Lucy is worried about Eva. Can the A.S. Society survive another year?

10. Together: By Michael Sams
Together is a two-hander. The play is about Lauren and Kyle. It follows them from their first meeting, through several milestones of their relationship and marriage and the lives of their extended family and friends. All is going well for the couple until an unforeseen event pivots their plans.
